As research for his next novel, Charles Condomine invites medium, Madame Arcati, to conduct a séance at his dinner party along with his wife and friends, the results raises the ghost of his late wife, Elvira who has been dead for seven years. Only Charles can see or hear Elvira and no one seems to believe him at first. Soon Elvira makes her presence known. For Charles’ current wife, Ruth, Elvira’s presence is no laughing matter, particularly since Elvira seems eager to reclaim her former husband – either in this world or the next.
